Faith Formation

Grade K – 6 Program

The  Elementary Level of our Faith Formation Program has over 300 terrific children who are journeying with 22 dedicated catechists, and the help of adult and student assistants, hallway monitors, etc.! Classes meet on Sunday mornings after the 8:30 family Mass (9:45-11:00 am) or on Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 – 5:30 pm for Grades K-6.

Our First Communion Program is a 2-year program beginning in the 1st grade followed by 2nd grade. First Reconciliation and First Communions are celebrated in the spring of their second year of the program. We also offer an accelerated First Communion program for students who began their Religious Education journey in later grades. There are mandatory Parent meetings as part of the First Communion program, in which all Parents MUST attend as an important piece of their child(ren)’s religious education experience. The children and their families come together for a First Communion Breakfast in March of their First Communion year after the 8:30 Mass. First Communions are celebrated in late April and early May.

Grades K-6 use the Finding God Series of textbooks published by Loyola Press in a classroom setting, guided by a syllabus provided by the Faith Formation Coordinator. In addition to Finding God, students who are preparing for First Communion work with a First Reconciliation Book and First Communion book by Sadlier.

Our “Personal Safety Program” was incorporated in the 2013 Finding God Series by Loyola Press. In a joined effort to keep our children safe and protected at all times. Anyone who has any dealings with the young people must have completed a “Protecting God’s Children” training session and fill out a CORI form annually

Grade 7 & 8 Program

Middle school students are both intellectually and emotionally ready to take the challenge of a more mature approach to faith formation. They tend to be kinetic learners (they like movement) and have moved beyond the educational approach for elementary school-aged students. They need to be engaged and active!  Each class consists of a PowerPoint lesson, followed by either small group breakout sessions or a large group activity, to reinforce the message of the PowerPoint lesson.  Our classes run for an hour and a half for 12-week sessions.  Families have 3 convenient session times to choose from: we offer Sunday Fall from 9:30 am -11 am, or Wednesday evenings in the fall and winter from 6:00-7:30 pm.

We ask Parents to volunteer as Table Facilitators for the Grade 7 & 8 program.  We cannot offer this program without their help.  Parents will be asked to sign up for one or perhaps two classes at the beginning of their child’s session.

Confirmation Program

CHOSEN: Your Journey toward Confirmation is a 24-lesson program covered over the two years of our Confirmation Program.  CHOSEN’s methodology provides everything needed to prepare students both intellectually and spiritually to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and become lifelong disciples of Christ. CHOSEN seeks to reverse the trend of teens drifting away from the Church after Confirmation by winning over their hearts at this critical time in their lives. The program features highly effective and engaging material through videos, complimented with leader witness talks and group activities.

Our Confirmation program at St. John’s is completed in two years with 12 class sessions each year.  Classes are held on Sundays after the 10:30 am Mass from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm.  Classes will begin in October and run approximately twice a month through the end of April. Candidates are expected to attend Mass weekly, will be requested to submit Mass vouchers regularly, actively participate at class, as well as join in community service and parish service activities.  There is a required retreat during the two-year program.

All Grade 9 & 10 Students are expected to attend the Sacrament of Confirmation in the fall at the  5 pm Mass, where students are encouraged to share their gifts as Readers, Ushers, Greeters and Altar Servers.  Please contact or for further information.

Here at St. John’s, we are always actively recruiting potential catechists,  assistants and parent table facilitators to enhance and share our message to all!  Please call Fran Anderson at any time with questions, concerns or the offer to help in any capacity!
